Welcome to geocaching ideas! The best place to get inspiration on making and hiding your very own geocaches. Whether you just need some good hide locations or an idea for a great geocaching hide container or even making your very own well camouflaged container, we have many ideas and suggestions for you to try.

What is geocaching?
To sum it up geocaching has been called a hi-tech world wide treasure hunt, but to me is much, much more. The basic premise involves someone hiding a container with a log book and sometimes little trinkets inside this is known as a cache. The coordinates to the hiding spot location is then posted online. People use a GPS devices and the provided coordinates to try and locate the geocache. From this point you can sign the log book, maybe take a gift and leave something for the next person. It is also a good idea later to post on the geocaching website that you have found the cache and share your experience and maybe even post a photo of the area.

There are many types of containers ranging from large to small and even micro and nano caches. The smaller containers tend to only contain a log book or a log scroll. The fun part of hiding a geocache is what is commonly referred to as an evil hide which basically means a well camouflaged container in a really good hiding spot. Many geocachers love the tricky hides as it can add a great challenge to the experience. To Many geocachers hiding a geocache is just as rewarding as searching for one.

Thanks for the great ideas for hiding geocaches, me and my kids have had allot of fun build some of the ideas you have outlined on your site. I love how users can also submit some of there ideas – Mark

Please feel free to brows our site and get some ideas for hiding geocaches and take inspiration for others geocache hide ideas. Just remember when hiding a cache to hide it in a place that won’t be found by other non-geocachers (also known as muggles) and in a place that is not dangerous for geocachers to look. Great geocaching hide ideas are easy to make and only require a little imagination.

Happy Geocaching

So it’s getting to that time of year when geocaching comes to an end for us who live in the northern hemisphere…or does it. Yes winter is almost upon us but that doesn’t mean we have to pack the GPS away for the season, Winter geocaching can be a great way to get out and enjoy winter and enjoy geocaching all year long. Snow can add some fun and unique challenges to geocaching. It’s a good idea before you plan your winter geocaching outing that you are dressed and packed appropriately. Obviously you will want to dress warm and wear a good pair of warm and water proof boots. It also is a good idea to pack a warm drink; some hot chocolate can always warm every one up. When picking your geocaches check to make sure they are winter accessible, You can filter them from within the main geocaching website. Some caches just can’t be found as they could be buried under several feet of snow.

Now the unfortunate part of winder geocaching is there always spoilers, kind of like in the summer you find geotrails where grass has been matted down in the area leading to and at the geocache location, it is even more obvious in snow.

If your going to hide geocaches that you want to be findable all year round make sure you put them in an appropriate location, somewhere of the ground is the best. Good camo will also help as you won’t have the foliage you have in the summer to help hide it. Don’t forget to make under your listing in the attributes that is available in winter.
So get out there and enjoy our wonderful winters, there is still allot of wonderful wildlife to be observed and have some good old winter fun. Just be prepared you will never know when a good old fashion snowball fight will break out!

If your looking for a clever geocache hiding spot that will leave even the most seasoned geocacher scratching there heads, try the “abandoned bicycle” geocache. The great thing about this geocache is that it is so easy to set up but will be so hard for your cache seekers to find. Now before I go into it, i definitely would not recommend using a good bike or one that you use currently. Its best if you have an old junker laying around or you can maybe even find one that will work at a salvage yard.

What you do is get a bike water bottle kit….and that’s your cache !!! attach to the bike and put in your log book and a few goodies. Now for placing the bike you can do it a few ways. The best way is to find a public bike rack up town lock it in the bike rack and hehehe your done. Or you could chain it in the woods but it would stick out and attract geocachers instantly. To give a hint you can even stick a geocaching sticker to the water bottle or paint a small geocaching.com text on the bike.

This is a fun way to hide a caching and I’m sure your will get allot of DNF’s

When hiding a geocache is very important to to record accurate coordinates that you can post after all you don’t want to send everyone on a wild goose chase. You should first of all read the documentation that came with your gps unit for any tips that they might include for getting the most accurate satellite signals with their specific unit.

It’s a good idea to approach your cache from a clear area so your unit can acquire good satellite readings. It’s best to do it on a nice clear day so as to have little interference as possible. Hold your geocaching gps unit as close to your hidden cache as possible, if there are allot of branches that could cause interference feel free to hold it directly above the cache.

Keep in in the spot for at least a few minutes so the unit has good time to retrieve the satellite signal so you can get accurate coordinates. In addition it doesn’t hurt to repeat this step a few time to be sure that the readings are the same every time. Weather can effect the readings you will get.

If your looking for a sneaky geocache hiding spot that will be a challenge to find, the sneaky fake birds nest will do the trick. These are really fun and very easy to setup. Most craft stores sell fake birds nests in a variety of sizes. All you need to do is attach one of these nests to a tree in a natural looking way and place a small geocaching container inside and you will have a tricky little geocache that your hunters will have a great time finding.

For some extra sneakiness, you can even purchase a couple of small fake eggs, I have seen some plastic one that come apart, just place a small log scroll in one of the eggs and your sure to have a few geocachers scratching their heads.

Have fun

Are nano geocaches a pain? This gets brought up allot. There are some nano haters that really dislike them. The complaints usually are stemmed at the fact that the log scroll is very difficult to get out and even harder to put back in. Personally myself I love nano geocaches just for the fact that due to the size of them it opens up all new possibilities of hiding places, this can especially be nice if you are an urban geocacher.

I also enjoy hunting them, I love the challenge. For those that don’t like to search for them usually it lists in the description if it is a nano or a micro, so if you are not interested you can just pass them by and move on to a cache that is more to our taste.

If you do decide to go out on a hunt for nano’s it’s a good idea to bring some tweezers with you as it will make removal of the log scroll much easier.

I received a question by email the other day asking in geocaching, what is a travelbug hotel? I thought this was a good question and thought I would post it. Generally speaking a travel bug hotel is just a normal hidden cache that the owner has designated it for travel bugs only. They are good places to drop off travel bugs and trackables and to pick some up. The hotels are listed as a normal traditional cache that you can find them in the same manor as any other cache. From my own experience from the ones I have come across they tend to be on the large oversized caches as so the can accommodate many travelbugs and even some of the larger ones that can sometimes be trick to find a cache that they will fit in.
So if you have some trackables you wish to drop off, just do a search for travel bug hotel in the area you will be caching in and there usually be on within a reasonable distance.

Happy geocaching

The fake utility box! I first ran into one of these a few years ago and it to date is still on of my favorite finds. It took me 3 returns to finally get it. I have made a few of these myself since then. These are really easy to make and there are many different ways to go about it, so a big part is just choosing what is best for you.

At any local hardware store you are going to want to pick up a small piece of conduit pipe, you can get this in metal or in plastic, in addition you will need to get a out door utility box. For me I like the ones with the little spring doors it makes it easy for the geaocache searcher to get inside. Just attach them together and your in business. You can just put a log book right inside or you can put a smaller container inside the unit like a bison tube.

Now its time to hide it! I find these work well up against hydro poles or street lights, just remember the goldenrule, you cannot deface public property when hiding a cache so you will need to find away to attach it that does not damage what your at attaching it to. Have fun and I’m sure you will get allot of happy geocacher logs who really enjoyed finding your hide.

Geocaching is not only fun but it can contribute to a health lifestyle. In today’s busy society sometimes is easy to fall into low physical activity lifestyles. If your like me after a busy day at work the last thing I want to do when I get home is hope on the treadmill for an hour. I just want to relax and unwind. For me geocaching has changed that. When I get home from work now I look forward to meeting up with some family or friends and heading out for a few hours and finding some caches. If your a geocacher you know that many caches are hidden in nature parks and trails, there is allot of walking, climbing and even sometimes bushwhacking involved. Very seldom do I go out now with out breaking a sweat, and this is great, I am out doing something I enjoy and getting exercise all at the same time.
